(140) A public what?

It really is a public restroom ─in Kasuisai temple (public in the sense that anyone can use it). It is the oldest western style public restroom in Japan and as such, it is appropriate for it to host a life-size statue of Ususama-myo the Buddhist “deity” of toilets.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr)
