...Tomioka Hachimangu, has played an important role in the history of sumo --I wrote that again the other day. The sumo tournaments were held here from 1684 until 1833 (then they transferred to Ekoin/回向院 temple in Ryogoku/両国 near the Kokugikan/国技館 stadium where they are still held today) and this is why there is a monument related to sumo, this one here, where many important wrestlers have made votive offerings.
