(3483) Ueno 3: Buddha

Nihon_Arekore_03516_Ueno_Daibutsu_100_cl

Four centuries ago, when Ueno Park belonged to Kaneiji (寛永寺) one of the temples associated with the Tokugawa shoguns, it also had a big bronze Buddha about 6 m (19.7 ft). Between the great Kanto earthquake in 1923 and WWII, the only thing that remained from him is his face which you can also see on a small hill a little past Kiyomizu Kannon-do (清水観音堂) but on the opposite side.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore 2" set on Flickr).
