(1857) History aside though...

...one basic reason to go to Aizu (or anywhere in Fukushima, for that matter) is sake: in the area there are 25 of Fukushima's 53 sake breweries and among them, Suehiro (末廣) is Aizu-Wakamatsu's most well-known with a history starting in 1850.

Its site is open to visitors -here is a well with water directly from the spring used for the company's sake. (Back in the day, the small window was a sake selling spot.)

Of course after the tour you can try some of the company's better sake.

And of course you can buy them from the in-house shop.

My martial arts friends will appreciate the particular model" it's called Ken" (剣) meaning "sword" as in "Kendo" (剣道).

(For a bigger version of these pictures both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr. And for more pictures from the visit at Suehiro, see the "Suehiro sake brewery, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima, 19/2/2019" set, also on Flickr).
