(2266) End of the year #2: Daruma-san. Always Daruma-san

Nihon_arekore_02292_Mask_Daruma_100_cl

My personal totem, among the symbols of not only New Years' but also of Japan's folk culture in general, Daruma (達磨), founder of Zen Buddhism and personification of perseverance and endurance against life's difficulties. This year of course wearing a mask with the inscription "ekibyo taisan" (疫病退散) which could be translated as "dispersion of the epidemic".

(For a bigger version of these pictures both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
