(1946) Hikawa Maru

I posted a similar picture on Facebook on March but I didn't want it missing from here either -not only because I like what the seagulls have done with the chain but also because Hikawa Maru (氷川丸) is a historical boat. She was built in 1929, ran the Pacific (Yokohama-Vancouver-Seattle)as a luxurious liner until 1941, became a hospital after Pearl Harbor, survived the war, became a cargo ship until 1953, returned to its old Yokohama-Seattle line until 1960 and since then has been permanently berthed in Yokohama. Now, it's a museum, particularly important for judoka since Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo died on it on March 3, 1938 while returning from an International Olympic Committee meeting in Cairo.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
