(213) What is it that falls seven times and gets up eight?


For reasons I have explained in Greecejapan I feel a special connection with Daruma-san, Zen patriarch, doll and symbol of endurance against difficulties. I guess the Japanese feel the same; that’s why they flaunt him everywhere, especially as the New Year approaches. Here he is flying over Asakusa’s Nakamise-dori wishing in his own, frowning way, a Happy New Year!
