(1887) Ancient sumo

At the Edo Tokyo Museum, a depiction of the wrestling bout between Nomi no Sukune (野見宿禰) and Taima no Kehaya (当麻蹴速); Nomi no Sukune won, killed his opponent and is considered the founder of sumo. The bout supposedly took place in 23 BC, during the reign of Suinin (垂仁), 11th emperor of Japan -if any of that really happened is of course something we will never find out.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr)
