(692) Kanda 1

The area called “Kanda” (神田) in Chiyoda (千代田) Ward is one of the main areas of old Tokyo and Edo; even today you can see there various buildings built in the old style (from the Edo and Meiji periods, roughly from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th) and especially those in the “Kanban kenchiku” (看板建築) style. These are buildings with flat facades, often covered with copper plates (for protection against fires) used mostly as stores of the rich merchants who lived in the area. Today many of those buildings have been abandoned while others still operate since then –most often than not as restaurants.
