(343) Tanabata in the old city (1)

This weekend, the shitamachi  (下町), Tokyo’s “old city” had its Tanabata festival; the Tanabata is the rendezvous of two celestial lovers and people who follow this blog know that I have written extensively about it two years ago. The shitamachi has this festival in the kitchenware area (yes, Tokyo does have a kitchenware area) called “Kappabashi” (かっぱ橋) where “bashi” is “bridge” and “kappa” a legendary water sprite. In the picture you can see the golden statue of a kappa found in this area.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr)
