...this time of intellectual and physician Gonda Naosuke (権田直助, 1809-1887) who was also the priest of Afuri Jinja; part of the Kokugaku (国学) movement that promoted distancing from the influence of classical Chinese thought and the effort to create a philosophical system based on Shintoism and old Japanese texts, Gonda was very fitting for the position of the head of a shrine as important as Afuri Jinja was (and still is.)
