In the entrance of Takashimaya, the big department store in Nihonbashi, a huge cherry blossom ikebana composition from Hiroki Ohara (小原宏貴), fifth generation head of the Ohara school of ikebana. And you only thought ikebana comes in sizes you can fit on a table! (For those interested, the artist has posted on Instagram a video about how he set it up.)

Στην είσοδο του Τακασιμάγια, του μεγάλου πολυκαταστήματος στο Νιχονμπάσι, μια τεράστια σύνθεση ικεμπάνα με ανθισμένες κερασιές από τον Χιρόκι Οχάρα (小原宏貴), πέμπτης γενιάς επικεφαλής της σχολής ικεμπάνα Οχάρα. In the entrance of the same department store in Ueno I was talking about yesterday (its name, incidentally, is Matsuzakaya/松坂屋 and is, I think, the biggest in Taito Ward) a bonsai cherry tree in a spot usually reserved for ikebana compositions.

Στην είσοδο του ίδιου πολυκαταστήματος στο Ουένο για το οποίο έλεγα εχτές (η ονομασία του, παρεμπιπτόντως είναι Ματσουζακάγια/Matsuzakaya/松坂屋 και είναι, νομίζω, το μεγαλύτερο στον δήμο του Τάιτο) μια κερασιά μπονσάι σε μια θέση που συνήθως φιλοξενεί συνθέσεις ικεμπάνα.

As we all know, cherry blossoms means hanami (i.e. we eat and drink under the cherry trees pretending to appreciate their flowers) and as we all know, there is a correlation between cherry blossoms, Ueno and panda. And as we all know, the Japanese like plush animals; put them all together and we end up with this composition which was decorating a counter at an Ueno department store.

Όπως όλοι ξέρουμε, ανθισμένες κερασιές σημαίνει χανάμι (δηλαδή τρώμε και πίνουμε κάτω από τις κερασιές με πρόφαση ότι απολαμβάνουμε τα λουλούδια τους) και όπως όλοι ξέρουμε υπάρχει ένας συσχετισμός μεταξύ ανθισμένων κερασιών, Ουένο και πάντα. Και όπως όλοι ξέρουμε στους Ιάπωνες αρέσουν τα χνουδωτά ζωάκια· αν τα βάλουμε όλα μαζί καταλήγουμε στη σύνθεση της φωτογραφίας, η οποία διακοσμούσε έναν πάγκο σε ένα πολυκατάσταστημα στο Ουένο.

...fast-food chains make burgers with any old kind of beef. In Japan, they make them with Kobe beef. (OK, I'm exaggerating: it was a special burger, for a limited time only in one particular fast-food chain. But still, I mean, it was Kobe beef!)

...οι αλυσίδες φαστ-φουντ, φτιάχνουν μπέργκερ με ό,τι κρέας λάχει. Στην Ιαπωνία, το φτιάχνουν με μοσχάρι από το Κόμπε. (ΟΚ, υπερβολές: ήταν απλώς ένα ειδικό μπέργκερ σε μια συγκεκριμένη αλυσίδα φαστ-φουντ και για περιορισμένο χρονικό διάστημα. Όμως παρόλα αυτά, θέλω να πω, ήταν όντως μοσχάρι από το Κόμπε.)

...but the Japanese understanding, at least in Tokyo, of how young people express their identity publicly is stickers like these. And because they are Japanese, if someone sticks one somewhere, others will follow at the same spot. And not three feet further. Incidentally this is one of the less than five such spots I've seen in whole Asakusa -and I've been looking for years.

...όμως η ιαπωνική αντίληψη, τουλάχιστον μέσα στο Τόκιο, για το πώς να εκδηλώσει ένας νέος την ταυτότητά του είναι αυτοκόλλητα όπως αυτά. Και επειδή πρόκειται για Ιάπωνες, αν κάποιος βάλει ένα κάπου, θα ακολουθήσουν και άλλοι στο ίδιο σημείο. Και όχι ένα μέτρο παραπέρα. Παρεμπιπτόντως, αυτό είναι ένα από τα λιγότερα από πέντε τέτοια σημεία που έχω δει σε όλη την Ασακούσα -και το ψάχνω χρόνια.

...we mentioned the other day. Sometimes in Japan you can see underwear in all kinds of weird places. And yes, they can probably be found elsewhere but not with a cherry blossom pattern!
