Or in Japanese 北島三郎: one of the most famous singers of the enka (演歌) style, that balances pop and traditional music and mostly targets the 50+ crowd. One of his rather recent hits (it was released in 2014) was "Takao-san" and is about the mountain so Hachioji made him honorary tourism ambassador and made a statue of him in the cable car station --the color is characteristic of enka's general style.
