(2681) From Egypt with love

Nihon_arekore_02706_Pyramido_100_cl

A pyramid in Japanese is "piramido" (ピラミッド/ぴらみど) and one of the words used for "hall" and also "temple" is "do" (堂) usually as a suffix. So when a temple in Kanagawa decided to make a new space for the storage of mortuary tables (ihai/位牌) they decided it would be best to try something different. A pyramid, for example. And they named it, of course "ぴらみ堂" because the only thing the Japanese can't resist is puns.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
