(3618) Sayonara

Nihon_Arekore_03653_Asakusa_Yamakichi_100_cl

The other day, I was talking to a friend and I was telling him that I am soon going to stop writing –the statement sounded somewhat strange to him since I have been writing non-stop since he met me, 20 years ago but the truth is that I have been writing twice that long, i.e. since 1986. And I am tired.

If the above sounds like an introduction to the ending of this blog, yes, this is what it is: after 15 years and 3618 posts, Nihon Arekore is pulling down its noren, at least in its current, daily format –probably once in a while I will be writing something and posting it on Facebook and if anyone sees it, fine. For the record, the reason I am stopping it today and not some other moment is because I was waiting for it to reach one million page views; this happened yesterday so I can now rest on my laurels. Or sort of because if we divide one million by 3618 we have 276 page views per day. Which, judging by Japan’s popularity today are ridiculously low –but Nihon Arekore started in 2011, when Japan wasn’t popular.

I am not going to claim that Nihon Arekore contributed to Japan’s popularity –Internet did that and especially smartphones, translation and navigation apps and social media. But Nihon Arekore had an audience and, for the most part, it was a satisfying endeavor, hence that I kept it going for 15 years regardless of what was going on in my life, in Greece and in Japan. Which wasn’t little.

At any rate, thank you all for the support all this time and I hope from time to time you will drop by and check a picture or a bad joke. And I am leaving you with a picture from Asakusa (of course) and particularly from the store Yamakichi (やま吉) in Kaminarimon Dori (雷門通り) from where I bought my first raku-yaki (楽焼) tea bowl, 17 years ago –at the time there was no “Enjoy Matcha” sign because very few people who could read English passed from there. Different times.

(3617) Easy rider

Nihon_Arekore_03652_Harley_trike_Ofuna_100_cl

In Kanagawa's Shonan (here, in Ofuna) you often see custom Harleys --this is one of the most impressive I have seen with possibly the most impossible rider.

(3616) Tengu aren't just in mountain temples

Nihon_Arekore_03651_Tengu_at_Ito_shop_100_cl

Sometimes there are also in shops selling sweets.

(3615) Χαρά σε πείσμα των πάντων

Nihon_Arekore_03650_Ceremony_hall_opening_100_cl

In Japan, funerals usually involve wakes which, because of lack of space, are held in rental halls called "ceremony hall" (セレモニーホール) --these spaces cover all procedures before cremation although crematoriums also have their own ceremony halls for convenience. Here, a new ceremony hall, somewhere in Kanagawa, on the day of its grand opening, with the standard celebratory red and white tents, standard special flower decorations used in openings (not funerals) and with stands selling yakitori skewers: death is death but festive atmosphere is festive atmosphere.

(3614) Imported goods

Nihon_Arekore_03649_Korean_pop_star_kimchi_100_cl

Kimchi from Korea (of course). And on the jar, a K-pop singer (of course). Because in Japan, same as everywhere else, authentic kimchi needs authentic K-pop

(3609) Cherry blossoms 2026, 5: Nihonbashi

Nihon_Arekore_03643_Sakura_2026_5_Yaesu_Sakuradori_100_cl

To be precise, this street, called "Sakura Dori" (桜通り) connects Nihonbashi to the area called Yaesu (八重洲) which is in the eastern side of Tokyo Station. This is exactly that spot: Yaesu entrance/exit, one of the two main to Tokyo Station is behind me, right across Sakura Dori.

(3603) For some reason I remembered Τhe Clash

(3599) Trains everywhere

Nihon_Arekore_03634_Shinkansen_bath_salts_100_cl

Bath salts in a shinkansen-theme packaging --yes, in Japan the trains even go to bathtubs.

(3597) Two Fuji

Nihon_Arekore_03632_Fujisawa_City_Hall_Fuji_100_cl

The one, the well known one, in the background. The other, in the name of the city whose city hall this picture was taken at: Fujisawa (藤沢). The difference is that Fujisawa's "fuji" has no connection with the mountain: it means "wisteria".
