(3326) Two buddhas

Nihon_Arekore_03359_Asakusa_Sensoji_Two_Bosatsu_100_cl

Technically speaking they are bodhisattva (in Japanese, "bosatsu" or "菩薩") but let's leave the religious discussion for another time: Avalokiteshvara/Kannon (観音) on the right, and Mahasthamaprapta/Seishi (勢至) on the left, both 2.36m/7.74 ft, donated by a man from Gunma to Asakusa's Sensoji temple where Kannon is worshipped; that happened in 1687 and the buddhas (OK, the bodhisattvas!) are still there, on the right of Hozomon (宝蔵門) gate.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
