On the bridge giving Asakusabashi its name (bashi/hashi/橋) means "bridge", facing east. In the distance, the area's other bridge, Yanagibashi (柳橋); in the Edo Period, around there you could find some of Edo's best geisha and as for the barges, they are boat-restaurants or yakatabune (屋形船) that during the spring and summer cruise up and down the Sumida river. (Also a tradition that started in the Edo Period).
