Or O-seibo (お歳暮). They are not directly connected to New Year's Day but they are generally sent in December to people you owe some favor or have some obligation (older relatives, teachers etc.) and are usually perishable and very often foodstuff that comes in special packaging for this reason. Here one such package we got from from some relatives, containing an assortment of high-quality cold cuts.
