One of the things people order for New Year's: red bream or in Japanese "tai" (鯛) which brings to mind "medetai" (めでたい) literally meaning "auspicious" and, by extension, joyful. The red and white paper is also festive and the character on it is "kotobuki" (寿) meaning "best wishes" and also "longevity".
