It's indirectly New Year-related: Mt. Fuji is considered the best thing to see in the first dream of the year (or hatsuyume/初夢) -the second is a hawk and the third an eggplant (Fuji and hawk because of the obvious connotations and the eggplant because the Japanese word for it, "nasu" is a homophone for a word that means "to achieve something great"). Here, Fuji-shaped persimmons, on sale at one of our neighborhood's super-markets during the holiday season.
