Going to the station that connects Shinsekai to the rest of Osaka (it's called Dobutsuen-mae/動物園) you go through a covered shopping alley called Janjan Yokocho (ジャンジャン横丁) or, if you want to go the official way, Nanyodori Shotengai (南陽通商店街). Which is old school even by the neighborhood's standards and which has some incredible shops like this tobacco store --pipes like this on the left side of the sign are from the Edo Period, they are called "kiseru" (煙管) and because this is Japan, they are still in use.
