(2788) The Chinese lion dance...

...is considered a celebratory thing in Japan, especially around New Year's Day. This one is also a lion dance but of a different kind, it comes from the Kabuki theater and the play called "Kagami Jishi" (鏡獅子) and here some one is dancing it publicly at the balcony of a building that promotes Asakusa's tourism; considering that the first days of the year, about 3 million people come to Sensoji for pilgrimage, promotion is probably not particularly necessary. I didn't catch who was the actor in the picture (probably someone from Kabuki's younger generation: these days they have some special performances in Asakusa's town theater) but he was very good at the difficult part of the dance, the swirling of the mane called "keburi" (毛振り).

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
