(2059) Something's missing

Nihon_arekore_02080_Kaminarimon_without_lantern_100_cl

Once every five years and for about one month, Tokyo's oldest landmark, the Kaminarimon Gate of Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, is without its characteristic red lantern. The reason is simple: despite its size, the lantern is made of paper so from time to time it needs to be replaced. The previous time was in November 2013 and, of course, I wrote about it then too!

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
