In the entrance of the Irohakai Shotengai (いろは会商店街) shopping street in Sanya (山谷), the closest thing Tokyo has to a slum (i.e. completely different from a real slum), Joe Yabuki (矢吹丈) the main character of the 1968-1973 manga/anime "Ashita no Joe" (あしたのジョー ) welcomes visitors to the area where, according to the story, he used to live while trying to become world boxing champion. The sad tone of the manga fits very well with the area's atmosphere.
