They are such an important matter for the Japanese that the meteorological agency has a special bureau dealing with them. More than a flower they are (and have always been) one of Japan’s symbols, one more piece to complete the puzzling picture of how Japanese view themselves and how they want to be viewed. Here, with Tokyo’s most recent symbol, the Sky Tree tower in Asakusa.
