(2490) There once was a big Buddha...

...in Ueno. He was made in 1631 and lasted until the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 --at that time he lost his head and a few years later, in 1941, his body was sacrificed on the altar of Japan's war effort as happened with other metallic statues. This pagoda in the Myanmar style, was built in 1967 to host his face, the only part that remains. Some time in the past, I had posted a picture of the face, I think, so here's one (that is, two) of the pagoda and the area around it in Ueno Park.
