One of the most characteristic images of shitamachi (下町), the Tokyo of townspeople -in the sense of those who were not samurai and who came to be Japan's broader middle class- and one that remains among my favorites: futon hanged out to air and fluff up. Aka "futon-hoshi" (布団干し).
