You certainly don’t need to dress up to do “hanami”, that is to sit under the blossomed trees and enjoy their flowers. However, there are quite a few Japanese women that feel that the hanami does indeed call for something more than your everyday clothes. Maybe because that’s how it was done in Edo, the old Tokyo.
