(2406) And for real Yoshoku...

Nihon_arekore_02431_Omuraisu_100_cl

...that is "Western Cuisine" and while still trying to find what that is (see yesterday's post) omuraisu (オムライス) i.e. omelet filled with rice cooked with ketchup from Tameiken (たいめいけん) with Nihonbashi in the background. The shop is in the area since 1931 and as I wrote in Instagram a while back it's one of the best omuraisu I've tried.

Nihon_arekore_02431_Omuraisu_100_cl

(2405) Western cuisine -in a manner of speaking

Nihon_arekore_02430_Yoshoku_sandwich_cl

I have often written about the subset of Japanese cuisine called "yoshoku" (洋食) that is "Western food": it isn't exactly "Western cuisine" (besides what does "Western cuisine" even mean?) but the pre-WWII Japanese understanding of what "Western cuisine" means (again, what does "Western cuisine" mean?) Here we have an excellent example of how far the concept can go: a two-sandwich pack, one with a burger patty in demi-glace sauce (burger patties are always, always, ALWAYS served in demiglace sauce in Japan: it's mandated by the Constitution) and one with spaghetti cooked in ketchup or, in Japanese "hanbagu" (ハンバーグ) and "naporitan" (ナポリタン), respectively, two of the most characteristic yoshoku dishes.

(2404) One, two, three -many Daruma

Nihon_arekore_02429_Daruma_line_100_cl

Unless they are in a shop or home that has bought them as talismans, at the stores they are sold, Daruma dolls usually come in such lines and, depending on the particular store's collection in even bigger ones. These sizes are the most common but you can also find them in much smaller (about 1.5") but also in much, much bigger ones (about 4'9") --these are very often used by politicians in election campaigns.

(2403) Goblins and noodles

Nihon_arekore_02428_Takao_san_soba_100_cl

Mt. Takao (Takao-san/高尾山) in western Tokyo is famous for two things: its soba noodles and the tengu goblins that are supposed to live there. The poster, that went around in the early Spring is advertising the former using the latter.

Nihon_arekore_02428_Takao_san_soba_100_cl

(2402) It looks like a food truck...

Nihon_arekore_02427_Nekobus_food_truck_100_cl

...and it actually is but the design isn't accidental: it is Nekobasu (ネコバス), the cat-bus from Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" (Tonari no Totoro/となりのトトロ ), arguably the most loved anime film of all times in Japan.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).

(2401) And after shrines...
