They are called "kuroko" (黒子) literally "black children" and they are stage assistants in the Kabuki theater that often go on stage, in front of the audience and they are dressed in black and wear black masks so they won't draw attention. (There's also a theory that the black attire of the entertainment industry ninja comes from the kuroko.)
