(2194) Everything for the mascot

Nihon_arekore_02219_Sensas_kun_100_cl

The Japanese word for census is "kokusei chosha" (国勢調査), the word before "2020" on the banner. But how can you make a name for a mascot, and especially a mascot that is a cute baby from this mouthful? You can't. So you call the baby "Sensasu-kun" of course from the English (that is, the Latin) word, census, adding the suffix "-kun" which is the version of "-san" used for small boys.

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
