... you can't not mention Kofukuji (興福寺) temple, one of the Seven Great Buddhist Temples of the city when it was the capital Heijo-kyo (平城京) and gave its name to a period of Japanese history (Nara Jidai/奈良時代, 710-794). Kofukuji was completed a little before that, in 669 and it is indeed impressive.
