(1664) Now why should it take...

...a foreigner to write "Summer" on a Ginza shop window, I have to admit I don't get. Even though I often make fun of their English.

(1663) Ginza nights in the day, cont'd

Other times, the signs are incomprehensible in a more traditional Japanese way. I mean, seeing the bunny ears, you get an idea of what it's about (at least if you've lived through the times when "I buy "Playboy" for the interviews" was not literal) but "Zen"?

Άλλοτε πάλι, οι πινακίδες ορισμένων μαγαζιών είναι ακατανόητες με ένα πιο παραδοσιακό ιαπωνικό τρόπο. Θέλω να πω, βλέποντας τα αυτιά κουνελιού, μπορείς να καταλάβεις περί τίνος πρόκειται (τουλάχιστον αν έχεις ζήσει τις εποχές που το "αγοράζω το "Playboy" για τις συνεντεύξεις" δεν ήταν κυριολεκτικό) όμως το "Ζεν";

(1662) The other back Ginza

If you look up the buildings of Ginza's back streets you can see tens of these signs with just one name, usually female, in Japanese and in Latin alphabet. These are the hostess' clubs (ホストクラブ) that make up the backbone of the area's night life and whose workers are considered by many the post-war evolution of geisha; if we leave the artistic part out (and this is a very big "if"), perhaps the description has some merit. Like geisha, the workers of these bars (this is what they are: not really "clubs") are not paid for sex but for flirting and keeping company and everybody knows that many of the deals and the relationships of Japan's financial and business life have been built here. And yes, they are often exclusive and accept new patrons only on recommendation and yes, they are usually very small, hence the big number on each building.

(1661) Back in Ginza...

...with the reminder that some things don't change even in high-class and expensive areas.

(1660) To each his own trash

And if you are a school of the Kyokushin (極真) style of karate which is famous for breaking objects, your trash looks something like this.

(1659) And since we were in Ginza...

...here is an example of the area's architecture. Not particularly characteristic but impressive, I think.
