(1997) You know New Year's is near...

...when your neighborhood super-market sets up special freezers for crabs (crab is one of the things eaten during the New Year period)

(1997) Ξέρεις ότι πλησιάζει η πρωτοχρονιά...

...όταν τα σούπερ-μάρκετ της γειτονιάς σου στήνουν ειδικούς καταψύκτες για καβούρια (το καβούρι είναι από τα φαγητά της περιόδου της πρωτοχρονιάς.

(1996) December equals Christmas...

...equals Christmas trees equals Chirstmas trees' decorations. Like this panda-yokozuna (sumo champion) which, incidentally I saw in Kamakura and not in Ueno, Japan's panda capital.

(1996) Δεκέμβρης ίσον Χριστούγεννα...

...ίσον χριστουγεννιάτικα δέντρα ίσον στολίδια για χριστουγεννιάτικα δέντρα. Όπως αυτό εδώ το πάντα-γιοκοζούνα (πρωταθλητής του σούμο) το οποίο, παρεμπιπτόντως, το είδα στην Καμακούρα και όχι στο Ουένο, την ιαπωνική πρωτεύουσα των πάντα.

...but at some point we certainly need to take a closer look at this sake. And it conveniently comes only in a small bottle -like all beauty products.

(1995) Δεν το έχουμε δοκιμάσει...

...όμως αυτό το σάκε σίγουρα θα πρέπει κάποια στιγμή να το δούμε από πιο κοντά. Και βολεύει πολύ που κυκλοφορεί μόνο σε μικρό μπουκάλι -όπως όλα τα προϊόντα ομορφιάς.

(1994) Famous rags

Generally I avoid featuring tenugui here because they are the only thing I collect and I have hundreds. But I use them all the time and they've started being worn out so I thought I'd immortalize them too (they are a very Japanese thing anyway) so why not start from this? Like it says itself, it's from Ryoanji (龍安寺) temple in Kyoto, home of the most famous "zen garden" (that isn't) where we went last year and of course its subject is that very garden.

(1994) Διάσημα πανιά

Γενικά αποφεύγω να κάνω θέμα τα τενουγκούι γιατί είναι το μόνο πράγμα που μαζεύω και έχω εκατοντάδες. Όμως επειδή λόγω χρήσης σιγά-σιγά χαλάνε, θα ήθελα να τα απαθανατίσω κι αυτά (ούτως ή άλλως, ιαπωνικό πράγμα είναι) οπότε γιατί να μην ξεκινήσω από αυτό; Όπως λέει και το ίδιο, είναι από τον ναό Ριοάντζι (龍安寺) στο Κιότο, σπίτι του πιο διάσημου "κήπου ζεν" (που δεν είναι) στον οποίο είχαμε πάει πέρσι και βεβαίως το θέμα του είναι ο ίδιος ο κήπος.

(1993) The funny thing is...

...that in Japanese it says exactly the same: "donto kato" (どんとキャット); in Japanese the word for "cat" is "neko" (猫) but probably everyone understands "kato/キャット" too.

(1993) Το αστείο είναι...

...ότι και στα ιαπωνικά λέει ακριβώς το ίδιο: "ντόντο κάτο" (どんとキャット) -η γάτα στα ιαπωνικά λέγεται "νέκο" (猫) όμως μάλλον όλοι καταλαβαίνουν και το "κάτο/キャット".

(1992) Greasy chopsticks

In Yotsuya (四谷), in the alley with the restaurants called "Shinmichi Dori" (しんみち通り), "Bambi" (バンビ ) is the closest thing I've seen to an American greasy spoon. 

There are no tables -just a counter. 

And the food is what the Japanese call "yoshoku" (洋食) or "Western food" or rather the Japanese idea about what is "Western food". The two dishes we tried were two variations of the surf-and-turf theme, the one with a wagyu beef hamburg steak with cheese, rice, breaded and fried shrimp, a crab cream croquette and salad...

...and the other with a wagyu hamburg steak, two crab cream croquettes and salad -and the rice in a separate plate. As usually happens with greasy spoons, they were delicious (in a home cooking way), filling and very reasonably priced.
