(17) 花守り

我らの名は狛犬、獅子とも呼ばれる。遠くインドから日本までアジア各地で我ら神獣は我は口を開き、彼は口を閉じ、阿吽の呼吸で神の家を守ってきた。天神様の梅と共に湯島天神のアイドルを張る。

(17) Flower protector

 

Their name is “koma-inu” (“Korean lions”) and they guard the Shinto shrines; the one with its mouth open, forming the syllable “a” and the other with its mouth closed, forming the syllable “um” –altogether makes “Aum”, one of the older sacred sounds of Asia. Here, together with the plum trees, a trademark of Tokyo’s Yushima Tenjin shrine.

(17) Προστάτης των λουλουδιών

Τα λένε «κόμα-ίνου», («λιοντάρια από την Κορέα») και φρουρούν τα σιντοϊστικά τεμένη, το ένα με το στόμα ανοιχτό, προφέροντας τη συλλαβή «α» και το άλλο με το στόμα κλειστό, προφέροντας τη συλλαβή «ουμ»· όλο μαζί «Άουμ» (ή «Ομ»), από τους παλιότερους ιερούς ήχους της Ασίας. Εδώ, παρέα με τις δαμασκηνιές, σήμα κατατεθέν του τεμένους Γιουσίμα Τέντζιν, στο Τόκιο.

(16) プラットホームで

いかにも日本って感じじゃないけど、日本らしい写真ベストテンには必ず入る風景だね。 ホームで電車を待ちながら携帯をいじる彼女。メール？時刻表チェック？読書？テレビ？

(16) Of girls and trains

It’s hard to say “this picture is the most characteristic of Japan”. But a Top 10 of such pictures would certainly include this: a girl standing on the train station platform and doing something on her cell phone. Writing a text message? Checking the train timetables? Reading? Watching TV?

(16) Περί κοριτσιών και τρένων

Είναι δύσκολο να πεις «αυτή η εικόνα χαρακτηρίζει περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη την Ιαπωνία». Σίγουρα πάντως, από το Τοπ 10 τέτοιων εικόνων δεν μπορεί να απουσιάζει αυτή: μια κοπέλα που στέκεται στην πλατφόρμα του σταθμού του τρένου και κάνει κάτι στο κινητό της. Γράφει μηνύματα; Τσεκάρει δρομολόγια; Διαβάζει;  Βλέπει τηλεόραση;

(15) 早春

梅と桜は日本人でも間違えるぐらい良く似ている。咲く時期も近い。梅の花が終わると桜がほころび始める梅は春の気配を告げる。桜は本当に春が来たと笑う。

(15) Almost

They look like them (even the Japanese sometimes mix them up) and they bloom at almost the same time –“almost” because the plum trees (ume) are actually a few weeks ahead of the famous Japanese cherry trees. These are the true harbingers of spring; the cherry trees are the confirmation.

(15) Περίπου

Τους μοιάζουν (ακόμα και οι ιάπωνες μερικές φορές τις μπερδεύουν) και ανθίζουν περίπου την ίδια εποχή –«περίπου» γιατί στην πραγματικότητα οι δαμασκηνιές (ούμε) προηγούνται των διάσημων ιαπωνικών κερασιών κατά μερικές εβδομάδες. Αυτές είναι ο πραγματικός πρόδρομος της άνοιξης· οι κερασιές είναι η επιβεβαίωση.

(14) 卒業の日

東京、中野駅で出会った卒業式に向かう学生たち。ちょうど1年前、この娘たちは就職先を見つけるために同じ東京都内を会社説明から会社説明会へと就職活動用の黒いスーツで飛びまわっていた。彼女たちの社会人生活は今年4月に始まる。

(14) Graduation day

Graduate students in Nakano Station in Tokyo, on their way to their graduation ceremony (sotsugyoushiki). Exactly one year before, the same girls, dressed in a very specific black suit were running from one company information session (kaishasetsumeikai) to the other, trying to secure the job they will get this year, 2-3 weeks after their graduation.
