Or to be exact, Mitama Ire (神霊入れ), a ceremony held on the previous day of the three-day matsuri (that is, today) when the priests of Asakusa Jinja transfer the shrine's three kami to the omikoshi so on Sunday they will be processed all around Asakusa. Here, the representatives of Asakusa's neighborhoods waiting for the ceremony to begin.
And here the omikoshi after the ceremony: later, they will be wrapped in white and pink ribbons and will wait until Sunday morning when their rounds will start. For the record, I'm almost certain I have posted similar pictures before but when you live in Asakusa you can't not revisit the matsuri from time to time.
(For a bigger version of these pictures both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore" set on Flickr).
