...in the western part of Tokyo has taken its name from the fact that back in the day it had a "bagful of lakes"(ike池 is "lake" and fukuro/袋 is "bag" --actually "sack"). The lakes have been long gone but "fukuro" also means "owl" (written with the character "梟" though) which has become the area's symbol. Here, several owls in a modern sculpture outside the Hotel Metropolitan, near Ikebukuro Station.
