In Japanese, the sound "di" doesn't differ from the sound "ji". Therefore to the Japanese, "adidas" sounds like "ajidas". But "aji" (鯵/アジ) is the Japanese word for horse mackerel so "adidas" becomes "aji desu" (アジ です) i.e. "it is horse mackerel". And the three leaves complete the picture.
