Leaving the Kashima Jingu and going towards the station you come across the statue of Tsukahara Bokuden (塚原 卜伝, 1489-1571), one of Japan’s most famous swordsmen, founder of the Kashima Shinto-ryu (鹿島新當流) school of sword-fighting and greatly responsible for the shrine’s martial arts connection.
