...but this ad, stuck on the train's door, is for one of the best English language cram schools for students interested in passing in colleges where English is a major subject. Or that the people in the picture are some of the school's teachers.

...όμως η συγκεκριμένη διαφήμιση, κολλημένη στην πόρτα του τρένου, είναι για ένα από τα καλύτερα φροντιστήρια αγγλικών για παιδιά που ενδιαφέρονται να μπουν σε πανεπιστημιακές σχολές στις οποίες τα αγγλικά παίζουν μεγάλο ρόλο. Και ότι οι εικονιζόμενοι είναι μερικοί από τους δασκάλους του.

...the long, slim, chocolate-coated biscuit sticks are a subject on which some day I must write a feature, if for no other reason than to discover in how many flavors they come (on occasion, I have counted over 20). Here for example, is one with a matcha flavor -matcha is the expensive green tea used in sado (茶道) erroneously also known as "tea ceremony".

...τα στενόμακρα μπισκοτάκια με επικάλυψη σοκολάτα, είναι ένα θέμα για το οποίο κάποια στιγμή πρέπει να κάνω ένα αφιερωματάκι, αν μη τι άλλο για να ανακαλύψω σε πόσες γεύσεις βγαίνουν (κατά καιρούς έχω μετρήσει πάνω από 20). Εδώ ας πούμε, είναι ένα με γεύση μάτσα, το ακριβό πράσινο τσάι  που χρησιμοποιείται στο σάντο (茶道) εσφαλμένα γνωστό και ως "τελετή του τσαγιού".

(1632) Why this came to me me today...

...with the heat index at 119°F is something I don't really get but at any rate, it is a chemical heating pack for shoes. In other words, something that, when it's very cold, you put in your shoes to keep your feet warm. For anyone interested, these objects are collectively called "kairo"  (懐炉/カイロ) which literally means "pocket hearth".

(1632) Γιατί μου ήρθε αυτό σήμερα...

...που ο δείκτης θερμότητας είναι στους 48 βαθμούς Κελσίου, δεν το καταλαβαίνω όμως πρόκειται για χημικό θερμαντικό παπουτσιών. Ήτοι, για κάτι που όταν κάνει πολύ κρύο, το βάζεις μέσα στα παπούτσια σου για να σου κρατήσει ζεστά τα πόδια. Για όσους ενδιαφέρονται, αυτού του είδους τα αντικείμενα λέγονται συλλήβδην "κάιρο" (懐炉/カイロ) που σημαίνει κυριολεκτικά  "μαγκάλι τσέπης".

(1631) I think I overdid it with Kyoto...

...(I honestly can't take this city seriously) but here's something that made a really good impression: an ad for the city council with information, guidelines about how to watch it online, through social media, your smartphone or TV, all in a very festive and participatory atmosphere.

...(είναι που πραγματικά δεν μπορώ να την πάρω στα σοβαρά αυτή την πόλη) όμως να κάτι που μου έκανε πολύ καλή εντύπωση: διαφήμιση του δημοτικού συμβουλίου με πληροφορίες, στοιχεία για το πώς μπορείς να το παρακολουθήσεις ονλάιν, στα σόσιαλ μίντια με το κινητό σου ή στην τηλεόραση και γενικώς ένα πολύ εορταστικό και συμμετοχικό κλίμα.

Ένα από τα καταστήματα της αλυσίδας οπτικών Paris Miki. Εναρμονισμένο με το παραδοσιακό πνεύμα της πόλης...

...και με διάθεση για εξυπνάδες. Στη στοά Σινκιογκόκου Ντόρι (新京極通).

(1627) Still speaking of Kyoto -from an architectural point of view

This is the first thing you see when you exit the Kyoto Station from the north side. It's called "Kyoto Tower" (京都タワー -in Japanese too), it's 430 ft high, it was completed in 1964 and it's on the top of a hotel. Which hotel, as I have heard several Japanese put it, is the best place to stay in Kyoto because it's the only place from where you can't see Kyoto Tower. 

It doesn't get much better at night either.

(1627) Και συνεχίζοντας να μιλάμε για το Κιότο -από αρχιτεκτονική άποψη

Αυτό είναι το πρώτο πράγμα που βλέπεις όταν βγαίνεις από τη βόρεια πλευρά του σταθμού του Κιότο. Λέγεται "Kyoto Tower" (京都タワー και στα ιαπωνικά), έχει ύψος 131 μέτρα, ολοκληρώθηκε το 1964 και βρίσκεται πάνω από ένα ξενοδοχείο. Το οποίο ξενοδοχείο, όπως έχω ακούσει αρκετούς Ιάπωνες να λένε, είναι το καλύτερο σημείο για να μείνεις στο Κιότο καθώς είναι το μόνο σημείο από το οποίο δε βλέπεις το Kyoto Tower.  

Δεν είναι καλύτερο ούτε τη νύχτα.

(1626) And speaking again of Kyoto -from a theater studies point of view

Just after you cross Kamogawa (鴨川) River from the Shijo Ohashi (四条大橋) bridge and before you enter the city's most famous area, Gion (祇園) where everybody comes to spot a geisha or maiko (and usually succeed), you see on your left the statue of Izumo no Okuni (出雲阿国), the priestess from the Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) shrine who, in the early 17th century and the Edo period, gathered a troupe and gave dance, song and drama shows on the river's bed when it was dry. The genre she created still exists today: it's called "Kabuki" (歌舞伎).

(1626) Και ξαναμιλώντας για το Κιότο -απο θεατρολογική άποψη

Μόλις περάσεις τον ποταμό Καμογκάουα (鴨川) από τη γέφυρα Σίτζο Οχάσι (四条大橋) και πριν μπεις στη γνωστότερη περιοχή της πόλης, τη Γκιόν (祇園) όπου όλοι έρχονται για να πετύχουν κάποια γκέισα ή μάικο (και συνήθως το καταφέρνουν), βλέπεις στα αριστερά σου το άγαλμα της Ιζούμο νο Οκούνι (出雲阿国), της ιέρειας από τον ναό Ιζούμο Τάισα (出雲大社) που στις αρχές του 17ου αιώνα και της περιόδου Έντο, έφτιαξε έναν θίασο και έδινε παραστάσεις χορού, τραγουδιού και δράματος στην κοίτη του ποταμού  όταν ήταν στεγνή. Το είδος που δημιούργησε υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα: λέγεται "Καμπούκι" (歌舞伎).

...apparently people over there have taken the talk about tradition too seriously. Here for example is the sign of one of the city's most central koban (交番) i.e. police substation.

(1624) Wild cats

A variation I saw in Kyoto of the manekineko (まねきねこ/招き猫/まねき猫) the cat-talisman that shops use to beckon to customers. Atsuko sees her as happy -I think she's rather scary.

Μια παραλλαγή που είδα στο Κιότο, στο μοτίβο της μανεκινέκο (まねきねこ/招き猫/まねき猫), της γάτας-γουριού που γνέφει στους πελάτες να μπουν στα μαγαζιά. Η Άτσουκο τη βλέπει πολύ χαρούμενη -εγώ μάλλον τρομακτική.

(1622) Patriotic crackers

In the chaos that are "senbei" (煎餅/せんべい) i.e. savoury crackers made of rice flour and can be found all over Japan in countless variations and flavors, the fried "asahi-age" (朝日あげ) by the Harimaya (播磨屋) company are really in a league of their own. I have to admit though that I would enjoy them a little more if the company/s owner didn't have somewhat, ahem, extreme ideas about patriotism which you can surmise from the slogan (which however is only in English) on the packaging (see last picture) but also from his lengthy proclamations in the corporate website (which, however, are only in Japanese.)
