I (and pretty much everybody) often deal with the Japanese obsession for cute mascots with a touch (a heavy touch) of irony but sometimes it can prove to be very useful. One of the most, ahem, characteristic examples is Hani-maru (はに丸) a very popular character from the public network NHK who used to present a children's program: is there a better way for very small children to learn abut the Haniwa (埴輪) figures, one of the oldest (i.e. 3-6th century) forms of Japanese history?
