(3411) Dragon music

Nihon_Arekore_03444_Enoshima_suikinkutsu_100_cl

Lost somewhere among the various temples and shrines of Enoshima's mountain, a suikinkutsu (水琴窟) --literally "water koto cavern" where "koto" is the well-known traditional instrument that looks like a big zither. The thing goes as follows: you use the dipper to scoop water from the basin and pour it carefully in the hole of the vessel that is buried in the ground in front of the basin --if you do it right, you get a sound that really is like that of a the koto or perhaps of a small bell. (The dragon just heard the discussion about water and came to check it out: in Japan, where there is water there are dragons.)

(For a bigger version of this picture both in color and black and white, check my "Japan Arekore 2" set on Flickr).
