The painting style using themes from Zen Buddhism, is called "zenga" (禅画) and Daruma's portraits are one of the most characteristic such themes. These ones are made in Shorinzan and you can buy them --I didn't get one but this gives me a reason to go again. As if I needed one!

Shorinzan's main Daruma: here, in front of him, the temple's clerics paint a small dot on the center of the eye of the Daruma people buy, to make sure that the wish will come true.
A similar micro-ceremony is also performed in another place in Shorinzan, in front of another, smaller, statue of Daruma.

Ο βασικός Νταρούμα του Σόρινζαν: εδώ, μπροστά του, οι κληρικοί του ναοί ζωγραφίζουν μια μικρή τελίτσα στο κέντρο του ματιού των Νταρούμα που αγοράζει ο κόσμος για να είναι σίγουρο ότι η ευχή θα πιάσει.

For someone who is really interested about Daruma and his various incarnations around Japan, Shorinzan has a room that is heaven: a Daruma museum with an amazing collection from hundreds of dolls and more! At Shorinzan's fair there were some Daruma that I hadn't seen before --and that I don't think I will ever un-see now that I have seen them.

During the same period (the first days of January), Shorinzan hosts its own Daruma fair, separate from that of the city of Takasaki; that was the reason I went there for a second time in the same week.

On Shorinzan's fencing there are also Daruma offerings mostly from businesses --Daruma are as much an individual thing as they are shop or a company thing.

As you would expect, Shorinzan's ema (絵馬) i.e. the tablets where you write your wishes and offer them to the temple have the shape and image of Daruma --different colors mean different wishes.

Next to Shorinzan's entrance dozens of used Daruma are waiting to be burned in the special ceremony held by the temple every January --the ceremony is called otakiage (お焚き上げ) in Shorinzan (in other temples, it's called kuyo/供養) but it was held on a different day. Besides, I wouldn't want to see it because as I've said before, I don't agree with the custom of burning the Daruma after you have achieved your goal and have painted the second eye: I have all mine at home or have given them to friends.

Δίπλα στην είσοδο του Σόρινζαν, δεκάδες μεταχειρισμένοι Νταρούμα περιμένουν να καούν στη σχετική τελετή που γίνεται στον ναό κάθε Ιανουάριο --η τελετή λέγεται οτακιάγκε (お焚き上げ) στο Σόρινζαν (σε άλλα μέρη λέγεται κούγιο/供養) αλλά γινόταν άλλη μέρα. Χώρια που δε θα ήθελα να τη δω γιατί όπως έχω πει και άλλοτε, δε συμμερίζομαι το έθιμο του καψίματος του Νταρούμα όταν έχεις εκπληρώσει τον στόχο σου και έχεις ζωγραφίσει και το δεύτερο μάτι: όλους τους δικούς μου τους έχω στο σπίτι ή τους έχω χαρίσει σε φίλους.

And finally Shorinzan itself: not a spectacular temple (yes, the picture doesn't do it justice but not by much) of the kind you see by the dozen in Japan's countryside. But with a special weight for all of us Daruma fans!

At the top of yesterday's stairs, there is a clearing where you can find (among other things) this rock. The sign says "Daruma Stone" (Daruma Ishi/) but I think that no matter how much imagination you muster up you can't get from that to an actual Daruma.

Στην κορυφή της χτεσινής σκάλας, υπάρχει ένα πλάτωμα στο οποίο βρίσκεται (μεταξύ άλλων) αυτός ο βράχος. Η ταμπέλα γράφει "Πέτρα Νταρούμα" (Νταρούμα Ίσι/だるまいし) όμως νομίζω ότι όση φαντασία και να επιστρατεύσεις δεν πας από αυτό σε έναν κανονικό Νταρούμα.

Immediately after the gate comes a stairway of considerable size --not the worst I've seen in hillside temples but not the best either. Besides, the "san" (山) in the temple's name means "mountain".

Αμέσως μετά την πύλη ακολουθεί μια σεβαστών διαστάσεων σκάλα --όχι η χειρότερη που έχω δει σε ναούς που είναι πάνω σε λόφους αλλά ούτε και η καλύτερη. Άλλωστε, το "σαν" (山) που υπάρχει στο όνομα του ναού σημαίνει "βουνό".

The central gate of the Shorinzan Darumaji (少林山達磨寺) temple. It belongs to the Obaku (黄檗宗) line of Zen Buddhism and is dedicated to Daruma, or Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen and exists since 1697; the temple was connected to one branch of the Tokugawa shogun family and this is why it sports its crest. Its ninth abbot, Togaku (東嶽) was the one who made the first Daruma doll and taught the farmers in the area to make them too so they would have something to sell when crops didn't go well. The rest is a story we have told before --and have been saying everyday the last couple of weeks!

Ανήκει στη γραμμή Ομπάκου (黄檗宗) του βουδισμού Ζεν, είναι αφιερωμένος στον Νταρούμα ή Μποντιντάρμα, τον ιδρυτή του Ζεν και υπάρχει από το 1697· ο ναός είχε σχέση με ένα παρακλάδι της οικογένειας των σογκούν Τοκουγκάουα, γι αυτό και στην είσοδό του υπάρχει ο θυρεός της. Ο ένατος ηγούμενος του ναού, ο Τογάκου (東嶽) ήταν αυτός που έφτιαξε την πρώτη κούκλα Νταρούμα και έμαθε τους αγρότες της περιοχής να τις φτιάχνουν κι αυτοί ώστε να έχουν να πουλάνε κάτι τις χρονιές που οι σοδειές τους δεν είχαν πάει καλά. Τα υπόλοιπα τα έχουμε πει --και τα λέμε κάθε μέρα τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες!

And across the parking lot, there is this sign. Letting you know that you have reached the Shorinzan Darumaji (少林山達磨寺) temple, the place where the Daruma doll was invented.

And at some point you come to a parking lot where you see even more signs.

Crossing National Road 18, you get to a bridge to cross Usuigawa River (碓氷川). And you realize that something unusual (or for Takasaki standards, very usual) is going on there as well.

Διασχίζοντας τη Εθνική Οδό 18, φτάνεις σε μια γέφυρα για να περάσεις τον ποταμό Ουσούι-γκάουα (碓氷川) . Και διαπιστώνεις ότι και εδώ συμβαίνει κάτι ασυνήθιστο --ή για τα δεδομένα του Τακασάκι, πολύ συνηθισμένο.
