Literally: in Japanese, its name is Akamon (赤門) which means exactly that and it was the gate to the residence of the feudal clan Maeda (前田氏) in Edo, old Tokyo. It remains unchanged since 1827 and today it belongs to the campus of the University of Tokyo we mentioned yesterday.
