I mentioned them a few days back in a Facebook comment but they are so characteristic of the “native alcohol snacks” category that I couldn’t not give them one post here: small dried sardines called “niboshi” (煮干し/にぼし) sold in bags in supermarkets. OK, to be fair they are not used only as alcohol snacks but in terms of surrealistic value I believe this use takes the prize.
