As you approach the Shinto shrine Kanayama Jinja (金山神社) in Kawasaki on the first Sunday of April, the day of the Kanamara Matsuri (かなまら祭り) festival you begin to notice some unusual things: how often do you see miko priestesses on the street, dressed in their full robes?
